“Barbarus hic ego sum, quia non intelligor illis.” (In this place I am a barbarian, because men do not understand me. Ovid)
Ran in three parts, the same time each day – this is part three. Please register for all three parts.
Following the invasion of Britain (AD 43), Legio II Augusta, IX Hispana, XIV Gemina and XX Valeria Victrix have been given separate areas of the island to pacify. General Aulius Plautus has sent Legio 11 Augusta to the southwest and they are currently based at Caleva Atrebatum (Silchester). The local Atrebates tribe under King Verica are an ally of Rome and the legion has been enjoying some relative peace after their exploits against the Dumnonii and Durotriges. The legion has, in just a little over a year established itself as one of the Emperor’s best field units and the battle to take the Durotriges’ hill fort of Maiden Hill has cemented Vespasian’s reputation and his men’s. However, a little over a year after landing in Britain, Legio II has been split into small units (vexilli) and these have been scattered throughout the southwest whilst a permanent barracks is built in Isca (Exeter).
Your Century, the 3rd have been sent to a fortified settlement that squats on the edge of a deep valley (the Teign Valley in Dartmoor) called Duroaelius. The village is quite large and prosperous and the Dumnonii have been almost welcoming. However, a small pocket of anti-Roman sentiment is still being expressed some miles to the west by a small tribe. Led by an elderly warrior called Cataurus, they have contented themselves with disrupting your trade with nearby settlements and no bloodshed has actually been spilled. True, a number of goats and sheep have gone missing but nothing that has caused too much unease; the local women remain quite accommodating and the beer that these barbarians drink is cheap and strangely, gets better towards the end of an evening.
Then the druids arrived and settled in some rather dismal swamps near Duroaelius.
“They always settle in swamps, they’re all bloody mad!” S.Popilius Rufus (decanus of the 3rd and a good bloke in a Wedge or Testudo but he eats too much fish sauce and garlic, stay upwind.)
And now, Deieda, Cataurus’ daughter has come to see your Centurion, her father has fallen ill and she is worried about what her two brothers will do under the influence of the druids who she says are “dark“. She probably said a lot more to Centurion Lentulus but he probably wasn’t concentrating on the woman’s words if you understand my meaning.
Oh, and the latest shipment of grain from the small settlement of Duron is now four days late, your Centurion has been generous enough to order your contubernium to go and retrieve it and if necessary kick down some doors and take some names, “If I don’t get these books to balance, then I’m going to look a right twit when I have to submit my books to headquarters. That my son, is not going to happen.”
The Gods smile on all Rome’s diligent sons, but not you lot; the heavens open as you leave your marching fort and it begins to rain like it can only rain in Britain. Nevermind, you’ll likely catch some hideous barbarian disease and be able to return home soon, if you’re lucky.
Welcome to Legio II Augusta, welcome to the rolling green lands of Britain. VIRES ET HONOS! (“Strength and Honor”.
